Prevention

An important goal of this law is to stress “public health and prevention,” instead of “sickness and cure.”
It’s no fun to be sick – why not try to prevent sickness in the first place? The law includes major provisions to help prevent disease, illness, and sickness in the United States:
- Reproductive Health: Provides for free female birth control, breast pumps, and contraceptive devices for those who are insured.
- Harmful Substances: Funding for tobacco and smoking prevention, counseling to prevent alcohol abuse and drug addiction
- Obesity: Counseling to prevent or reduce obesity, promotion of physical fitness
- Disease Prevention: Coverage for screenings of various diseases. Ex. HIV testing, increasing access to immunizations, HPV vaccine
