Physicians Testify About the Need for a Public Option
Doctors for America members share their stories before a House Committee
WASHINGTON, DC—At the request of Representative Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX), physicians from Doctors for America testified today on the importance of the public option as part of comprehensive health reform. Dr. Vivek Murthy, and Dr. Alex Blum joined the panel to share stories and solutions aimed at fixing our nation’s broken health care system.
“Patients and doctors have spoken out overwhelmingly in support of a public option as part of the way to provide more affordable care while making private insurance companies more honest, higher-quality providers,” said Dr. Vivek Murthy, President of Doctors for America. “As physicians, we unfortunately see patients caught in our broken health care system every day. I hope Congress uses these stories to support their case for real health reform this year,”
“I am here today because there are 47 million uninsured and 87 million underinsured Americans who deserve better. A public option would allow my patients’ parents to choose between public and private health insurance,” said Dr. Alex Blum, pediatrician and National Field Director of Doctors for America. “Choice and competition is vital to providing high quality coverage in markets too often dominated by one insurance provider.”
