WASHINGTON, DC—Doctors for America strongly expressed their support today of President Obama’s appointment of Dr. Don Berwick, a pediatrician and President of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, to lead the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Over 1300 physician members of Doctors for America signed a letter of support for Dr. Berwick. Read the full letter here.
“President Obama’s choice to appoint Dr. Berwick as leader of the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Service is the right decision because of the critical role CMS will play in implementing the Affordable Care Act,” said Vivek Murthy, President of Doctors for America. “Under his leadership, Medicare and Medicaid patients will find a true leader in improving the safety and quality of our health care system.”
Dr. Berwick is one of the nation’s most respected voices on improving the health care delivery system. Health care leaders from across the political spectrum have hailed Dr. Berwick as the right choice to lead CMS. He has been hailed by physician and hospital leaders, patient advocates, businesses and a wide range of thought leaders.
“Partisan voices who suggest that Dr. Berwick is an advocate of rationing or government making patients’ health care decisions are blatantly misrepresenting Dr. Berwick’s record,” said Dr. Mandy Cohen, Executive Director of Doctors for America. “When you ask Dr. Berwick’s colleagues and students about his work, you learn that he is a champion for patient-centered care -- putting control of health care decisions in the hands of patients and their families in partnership with their physician."
