The following is a statement from Dr. Vivek Murthy, President of Doctors for America, on the House passage of H.R. 2, the bill that would repeal the new health care law:
“As a physician, I have seen firsthand how our dysfunctional health care system has failed patients. Our country spends $2.6 trillion on health care, more than any other country, but still millions of Americans suffer because they lack access to quality affordable health care. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act will bring about needed changes to our system to ensure that tens of millions of Americans who have gone without coverage in the past will now get the care they need.
However, there are those in Congress that wish to repeal health care law. Repeal would put the insurance companies back in control of our health care and deprive citizens of the freedoms and choices that the law provides. It would allow insurers to deny coverage to children with pre-existing conditions, cancel coverage when people get sick or injured, and place limits on the amount of care that people can get.
As a country we can do better. Democrats and Republicans should work together to improve the health reform law and create a more effective, humane, and financially sustainable health care system. Towards that end, Doctors for America is committed to working with the 112th Congress and the Administration to ensure everyone has equal access to quality affordable health care.”
