The following is a statement from Dr. Vivek Murthy, President of Doctors for America, on the one-year anniversary of the passage of the Affordable Care Act:
“Thousands of doctors and medical students joined with millions of patients one year ago to pass the Affordable Care Act. On this important day, we must celebrate and reflect on the positive impact that health care reform has already had on the lives of millions of Americans.
Since the passage of the Affordable Care Act, insurance companies can no longer deny children coverage based on pre-existing conditions. 4 million senior citizens have already received breaks on prescription drugs costs. 4 million small businesses can now get tax breaks for providing health insurance to their employees. $4 billion has been recovered through new Medicare fraud prevention efforts. Crucial investments are finally being made in building a higher quality and lower cost delivery system.
The passage of the Affordable Care Act was a critical first step in delivering the reforms that our health care system needs. We must continue to work together to strengthen and improve the law so we can finally build a patient-centered system rooted in justice, integrity, and compassion.”
