Washington, DC -- Doctors for America issued the following statement in support of the sit-in by House Democrats as they urge a vote for common-sense gun control measures:
Statement from Doctors for America Executive Director Dr. Alice Chen:
“Doctors and medical students stand with House Democrats tonight in their calls for common-sense gun reforms. Physicians see firsthand the devastating toll of gun violence on our patients and in our communities. How much longer must we watch the countless injuries from gun violence tear down the lives and futures of our patients? Everyday gun violence claims the lives of 91 Americans and injures countless others. Many of those who survive carry physical and emotional trauma for the rest of their lives. We simply cannot wait for change any longer.
“Leadership in Congress must act now to save lives and prevent future tragedies. We urge Speaker Paul Ryan to bring gun safety legislation to the floor. That should include an end to the effective ban on gun research at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and funding for this important work.”
