Statement on the President’s Executive Order on Immigration

.

Doctors for America issued the following statement on the Executive Order issued by the Trump administration which suspended the admission of all refugees to the United States for 120 days, indefinitely banned all Syrian refugees, and blocked citizens of seven Muslim-majority countries, refugees or otherwise, from entering the United States for 90 days.

Statement from Krishnan Narasimhan, MD of Doctors for America:

“We strongly oppose discrimination by religion, race, ethnicity, national origin, or refugee status.  In addition, we feel that this order will have a serious adverse effect on the health of vulnerable populations that should be considered carefully.

“A ban that blocks thoroughly vetted refugees from entering the United States will deny life-saving healthcare to some of the most vulnerable people on Earth, many of them women and children. Many of our physician members care for refugees who have faced war, starvation, torture, and persecution.

“A ban on travel from the seven nations will create serious interruptions in care for many patients as they are unable to return to the U.S. to continue vital treatments.

“Many of our colleagues in medical practice, residency programs, and medical schools hail from the nations affected by the ban and may be stranded abroad.  If they cannot return to the U.S., significant gaps in staffing will decrease access to care for many Americans around the country. Notably, many rural communities and other underserved areas rely on these physicians for needed healthcare.  Residency programs are advising caution on travel and even reevaluating offered positions. Americans may not be able to see their doctor, who they trust, due to this ban.

“For these reasons, we strongly urge the Trump administration to rescind this order. We encourage all healthcare institutions and stakeholders who are affected by this order to speak out and share their concerns.

“As physicians, our professional and moral obligation to speak for the most vulnerable compels us to speak out on this issue. America has always been a moral leader for the world. Let’s not turn back on that now.”
