DFA Statement on Speaker Crisafulli’s Decision to Adjourn Early

Washington, DC – Doctors for America issued the following statement in reaction to Florida House Speaker Steve Crisafulli’s decision to adjourn the legislative session early without closing the coverage gap.

Statement from Dr. Mona Mangat, Chair of Doctors for America and an Allergist-Immunologist based in St. Petersburg:

“This session, an unprecedented coalition of leaders from hospitals, businesses, and the medical community joined together to urge the Florida legislature to close the coverage gap because it will save lives, save the state money and create jobs.

“Despite the calls from communities across the state to act, the leadership in the Florida House has demonstrated an absolute failure to lead at every turn. Now, the House is packing up early and heading home without even addressing the 800,000 hardworking Floridians in the coverage gap. It’s shameful. Physicians don’t walk away from patients in need and Speaker Crisafulli should not shirk his responsibilities while Floridians suffer.

“Thankfully, Floridians have a champion in Senate President Andy Gardiner and members of the Senate who have worked toward forging a commonsense compromise to address the coverage gap. The Senate has laid the ground work for the House to return for a special session that will finally address Florida’s health crisis.

“Physicians call on the Florida House to end the political games and return to Tallahassee to put patients over politics and finally close the coverage gap.”
