Washington, DC – Doctors for America issued the following statement on Gov. Rick Scott’s announcement he will sue the federal government instead of seeking a compromise to address Florida’s coverage gap.
Statement from Dr. Mona Mangat, board Chair of Doctors for America and an allergist-immunologist based in St. Petersburg:
“Florida leaders have known for years that LIP funding would come to an end. Yet they have done nothing to protect Floridians. Now, in the final days of the legislative session, as the funding is set to expire, Gov. Rick Scott is ducking responsibility instead of acting in the best interests of Floridians. Our patients are suffering while this Governor is manufacturing a political crisis.
“The common sense voices in Florida all agree that returning Florida’s tax dollars to close the coverage gap is the right move for the state because it will save lives, save money, and create jobs.
“I urge Gov. Scott and the Florida House to listen to the majority of Floridians and the voices of the Florida Medical Association, Florida Hospital Association and the Florida Chamber of Commerce who support closing the coverage gap.
“It’s time for leadership not litigation. It’s time for patients over politics.”
